Instead, it picked up a pencil.
“I am my friend,” it wrote slowly, letter by letter, as if testing the truth of it.
The words didn’t argue back. They stayed.
There were small steps behind it—proof of trying, not perfection.
Mistakes were allowed. So was patience.
No applause followed. No one clapped.
But something important happened anyway.
When the world felt sharp or distant,
the hand holding the pencil felt steady.
And sometimes, that’s how improvement begins—
not by changing everything,
but by standing beside yourself
and choosing to stay.
